Why Concentration Creates Wealth and Destroys It

Nearly every large fortune was built on concentration. Nearly every lost one was too. The variable is not whether you concentrate, but whether you can survive being wrong about the thing you concentrated in.

Diversification builds no fortunes; it protects them. The founder gets rich by owning one thing intensely, a company, a sector, a bet held with conviction while others hedged. That same intensity, carried unchanged into the preservation phase, is what later ends the fortune, because the position that made the family is rarely the one that should carry it for fifty years.

The discipline is knowing which phase you are in. Concentration is the strategy of creation. Deliberate, unglamorous diversification is the strategy of survival. The mistake that recurs across generations is applying the creation playbook to a balance sheet that now needs the survival one, and confusing the conviction that built the wealth with a licence to risk all of it again.
